Capitate-Sessile trichomes

Cannabis plants produce three types of trichomes - Bulbous, Capitate-Sessile, and Capitate-Stalked trichomes. Capitate-Sessile trichomes are larger than bulbous trichomes, but smaller than capitate-stalked trichomes. 

 

What are trichomes?

 

Trichomes are small, crystal like structures found on the surface of the flowers and some of the leaves of cannabis plants. They are a vital protective mechanism for the plant and also produce cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, which give cannabis its unique smell, flavour, and therapeutic effects.

 

How are trichomes extracted from cannabis plants?

 

In medical cannabis products that use whole plant extract, trichomes are usually extracted through a process called solvent extraction. This involves using a solvent (such as ethanol or CO2) to separate the trichomes from the rest of the plant material. The resulting concentrate is then refined and purified to create a potent extract with high levels of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

 

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

 

While CBD and THC are both cannabinoids produced in the trichomes, they have different effects on the body. THC is known for its psychoactive properties, which can produce a "high" feeling, while CBD is non-intoxicating and may have therapeutic effects such as reducing inflammation, pain, and anxiety.

 

Can trichomes be seen with the naked eye?

 

Yes, trichomes are visible to the naked eye, although they can be difficult to see without magnification. They appear as small, sparkling crystals on the surface of the plant and can range in colour from clear to amber.

Assessing the colour of the trichomes is the best way to tell if a cannabis plant is ready to be harvested. Clear trichomes indicate that the plant is not yet fully mature, while amber or cloudy trichomes indicate it is ready for harvest.
